Windows_To_Literacy@MCYCA Literacy Intervention Centre for Students with Learning Needs The MCYC Learning Centre is now called the ¡¥Windows_ to_ Literacy¡¦ Centre to reflect its new mission statement: ¡§Literacy¡Kopening minds and hearts.¡¨ Literacy refers to the ability to read and write. In today¡¦s modern society, information is now accessed, used and communicated more quickly than before. It is thus increasingly important for an individual to be able to use printed and written materials. MCYC ¡¥Windows_to_Literacy¡¦ Centre seeks to bridge the gaps in the literacy skills of students with learning needs. We serve the following learners:
We provide comprehensive quality specialist intervention by teachers trained in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach. Over the last 50 years, the OG approach has been the most influential intervention approach designed expressively for helping dyslexic and other special needs learners develop their literacy skills. Features of our classes:
The Windows_to_Literacy Programme offered at MCYC consists of four sub-programmes running both consecutively and independently. It is expected that a learner will be on a sub-programme for two years.
The aim of this sub-programme is to help K1 and K2 learners with language delay, acquire the emergent literacy skills that are the basic building blocks for learning to read and write. The focus areas will include developing listening and speaking skills as well as building an oral vocabulary base.
The emphasis in this sub-programme is to help each learner develop a basic functional competency in his reading and spelling skills that will serve as a foundation for building effective comprehension and writing skills. In addition to multi-sensory phonics instruction, lessons will build competency in basic English grammar. The Foundation Literacy Skills Programme is best suited to the needs of P1 to P3 learners with special needs.
Learners who enter the Extended Skills Programme are expected to have a basic functional competency in their reading and spelling skills as the primary emphasis of this sub-programme will be on developing comprehension, and writing skills and strategies. The Extended Literacy Skills Programme is best suited to the needs of P4 to P6 learners with special needs as they would now require more help with literacy tasks at the text level.
This sub-programme will be offered to existing pupils who have passed their Primary Leaving Examination (PSLE) and entered secondary school. The focus areas will include building comprehension and writing skills and strategies as well as increasing the learner¡¦s vocabulary base.
